10 Online Summer Gigs for Teachers

Teachers around the country are counting down those days until summertime! While the summer is a much needed rest time from the classroom, many teachers seek summer gigs to supplement their income.

What’s great about these gigs is that you can still enjoy some summer fun while working remotely.

Online tutoring

As a teacher, you already have an expertise in multiple subjects. Online tutoring is one the best ways to supplement your income in the summer. You can tutor independently via Zoom or Google Meet. How to Start an Online Tutoring Business: Making 4-5 Figures a Month by Joanne B Kaminski, a former classroom teacher is a great summer read to help you jumpstart your own tutoring services.

If tutoring independently is not for you right now, you can tutor through companies such as BookNook or Hoot Reading.

If you are feeling a bit more ambitious, you can also teach your own classes through a teacher marketplace such as Outschool. There are so many types of classes you can teach on Outschool including enrichment classes such as stop motion animation, music including guitar, piano, violin, etc., maybe a summer bootcamp for phonological awareness. So many options! Listen to this episode from The Side Hustle Show called How to Make Money on Outschool: Tips from $10k a Month Teacher.

Online ESL/ Language Tutor

Are you multilingual? Consider tutoring English language learners or students in another language. Preply is as also a teacher marketplace based on language learning.

Test scorer

You have taken endless amounts of tests in your schooling especially while earning your teaching credential! See what it’s like to be on the other side. You can score tests on various subjects as well as score students from elementary aged to adults. Many companies offer “projects” at a set schedule or flexible. (See post the blog post, 8 Companies Employing Teachers As An Online Test Scorer.)

AI Trainer

Artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere. Even if you are googling something you will see AI working its magic. Companies including Outlier are looking for actual humans to train their AI tools. These AI trainer projects and tasks include writing responses to prompts and editing AI responses for accuracy.

Freelance Worker

You can use your talents to do freelance work in various industries such as graphic design, writing, copy editing, proofreading, and so much more! You can offer your services or apply for gigs on sites such as Upwork and Fiverr.

Update your LinkedIn

Are you on LinkedIn? LinkedIn has been a game changer for me for finding side gigs. You can find hundreds of companies offering the sides gigs above! Be sure join or update your LinkedIn. (That’s your homework!)

Reseller

Start by selling things in your home first. Need to clean out your wardrode? Old electronics collecting dust in the closet? Some of preloved items will sell online. Do you love garage sales and thrift stores? Buy low and sell high on platforms including eBay, Mercari, PoshMark, Depop. Facebook Marketplace is also another option to sell bigger items that you do not want to ship. (I started selling textbooks in college and miscellaneous things on eBay over 10+ years ago.

Live Stream Reseller

Take your collectibles or inventory from eBay, PoshMark, etc. and become a live seller on Whatnot. Whatnot is eBay meets Twitch where a community of sellers and buyers come together to share their affinity for different things including Pokemon, Disney, sneakers, and so many more.

Etsy seller

Etsy is another marketplace and a great platform for artistic teachers to sell their physical or digital products.

Furniture Flipper

If you have a knack for painting and fixing up furniture, you can flip antique furniture for high profit. You can sell all your furniture on Facebook Marketplace. (This is a nod to the Furniture Flipping Teacher. She had restored furniture and flipped them for a profit to initially pay off her student loan debt completely. Now she has a YouTube channel where she teaches others how to do the same.)

YouTube Content Creator

I have always said that YouTube is my professional development. You can share what you do in your classroom or create content based on one of your other passions. Content creators can begin to monetize their YouTube channels once they reach 1,000 subscribers.

Bonus- Rent Your Pool

One of the perks of being a teacher are those 2 months of summer break. Do you have a pool and enjoy hosting others? Consider renting out your pool for an hourly rate via Swimply. You can think of swimply as the AirBnB of recreation. Hosts on Swimply can also rent out their basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts too!

What is your summer side hustle?
